- First edition of this collection, 'the largest and most important publication of the founder of the Dutch and Swedish West India Companies and probably the first piece of American promotion literature in German. It had considerable influence in beginning the German and Swedish migration to Pennsylvania and Delaware' (Vail). On 10 November 1624, Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden (1594-1632), yielding to the persuasion of Willem Usselinx, issued a Manifest in Gothenburg which established the exclusive rights of a new Swedish company (Söder compagniet, or South Company) to trade with Africa, America, Asia and the Terra Magellanica or Australis.
Usselinx (1567-1647) came from a spice-trading family of Antwerp. As a young man, he had gone to Spain and Portugal and had seen the wealth accruing to those Catholic countries from their American possessions. Gustavus told Usselinx to create the company for which the Manifest provided a legal framework, to find investors, to get the thing moving.
This book publishes a number of documents, some in their original language and others in translation, to do with the new Swedish company.
J. Franklin Jameson of Johns Hopkins, whose account of Usselinx in Vol. II, No. 3 of the Papers of the American Historical Society (New York and London, 1887) remains the standard treatment of this extraordinarily resilient man, describes in detail (pp. 210-211) the content of the Argonautica: the most important memorial of a patient, far-seeing, international, Protestant company promoter.

- First edition in German of this interesting treatise on European maritime trade and commerce, first published in French the previous year and written by Arnould (1750-1812), the director of the board of trade during the French Revolution. Arnould clearly states his aims in the preface: he wants to give an outline of the history of maritime trade of the different European countries, to help in the analysis of the current political situation at the close of the eighteenth century. He maintains that it is of extreme importance that English expansionism is stopped and the English stranglehold on international maritime trade counteracted with a union of European powers. His treatise contains 'valuable information on the theory of trade [and] the state of the balance of trade in the eighteenth century' (Palgrave I, p. 58). He gives detailed information on political history, commerce and maritime trade of all the European countries, with a further section on America. Suggestions for maintaining and increasing the economic influence of the European powers are made, and the work can be seen as an early attempt at achieving a balance of power. The unidentified German translator adds extensive further information, quotes from German authors and claims to have corrected various mistakes. This work is a clear example of the European dialogue in political economy.

CROME, August Friedrich Wilhelm Allgemeine Uebersicht der Staatskräfte von den sämtlichen europäischen Reichen und Ländern, mit einer Verhältniss-Charte von Europa ... (Leipzig, bei Gerhard Fleischer dem Jüngern, 1818) 8vo, pp. xxii, [iij, 778, [4] errata, [2] advertisement, with seven folding printed tables, (on 6 sheets) & 1 hand coloured folding engraved plate.
- First edition under this title, first published in 1785 under the title Ueber die Grösse und Bevölkerung der sämtlichen europäischen Staaten, and re-issued in a revised and abbreviated form in 1794 under the title Ueber die Culturverhältnisse der europäischen Staaten. Very rare statistical review of the relative position and strength of the European states in the aftermath of French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars.
The most important feature of this work is the innovative visual representation of the statistical data. Crome was 'one of the first to employ geometrical and graphical technique in the presentation of statistics' (ESS, VI, 604), an idea that stemmed from his period as instructor in history and geography at the Philanthropinum in Dessau, where particular emphasis was placed on the visualisation of knowledge and facts. In his Verhältniskarte, which was already included in the two earlier editions, he introduced the idea of quadrated surface area maps of countries and peoples. The table was translated into French, Dutch and English and made his reputation as a statistician. The lower half of the plate is taken up by a visualisation, of the extent, population & revenue of the principal nations of Europe, using area to depict quantity and some form of pie chart, an innovation for which Playfair is normally credited (Statistical Breviary, 1801, see Tufte, p. 44). But it appears that Crome should rightly be credited with it.
Crome gives a statistical-political survey of Europe, with information on history, population figures, political systems, economic production, both in agriculture and in manufacturing industry, public revenue, national debt and military force. The detailed population figures also record the numbers of slaves and freed slaves in the British dominions. Crome begins with the Nordic states and Russia, then deals systematically with Austria, France, Turkey, Spain, Great Britain, Prussia, German-speaking countries excluding Prussia and Austria, Portugal, Switzerland, Italy and the republic of Cracow.
Crome (1753-1833) was a distinguished German statistician and economist, private tutor to the prince of Dessau, and from 1787 to 1831 professor of statistics and cameral science at Giessen, where he expected that 'under his influence a better national economy would be introduced, founded on the principles of Adam Smith' (Palgrave I, 467/8).

- Political Geography. Introduction to the statistical Tables of the principal Empires, Kingdoms and States in Europe (Printed for W. Lowndes and J. Debrett, London; L. White and P. Byrne, Dublin, 1789) 4to, pp. [iv], 35, [1], advertisement and four very large folding tables.
- First edition of this early attempt at giving a comparative account of the political, economic and social arrangement of Europe with the help of figures and tables. The idea was not only to provide information to the general public, but also to ascertain the relative strength of each country and to confirm Great Britain's strong position. In his introduction the anonymous author describes the source of his data, discussing in general the usefulness of such compilations, making disparaging remarks about Beaufort's unreliable data, and recommending Chalmers. On one table in the text a very basic inter-European comparison is effected by physical size, population, and population density, with a clear indication of Britain's relative position. A further preliminary chapter covers currency and Sterling exchange rates for each of the European countries to make the subsequent comparisons more obvious.
The statistical information, comprising both figures and text, is then arranged on four very large folding tables, covering I. Britain, Ireland, France and Spain; II. Germany, Austria and Prussia; III. Holland, Russia Denmark, Sweden and Portugal; IV. Italy (the Two Sicilies, Sardinia, Pope's State and Venice) Poland and Turkey. The data is arranged under various headings: population (overall, inhabitants per square mile, main cities), armed forces (army and navy), state of finances (annual revenue, military charges, general expenses, public debt); political constitution (form of government, legal system, religion, literature - which stands for cultural activity in general); agriculture and commerce; colonies; and general observations. The author gives a kind of running commentary, and adds further textual information to the figures presented.

- First and only edition of a very rare work of accountancy. After a lengthy preamble on the nature of trade, with reference to biblical and classical sources, Schultz turns to the importance of mathematics for merchants, in two particular instances. Firstly, he writes of astronomy, and the use of mathematics in navigation by the stars (he mentions Columbus and the discovery of the New World) and the calculation of the tides. The other practical application is bookkeeping and the importance of arithmetic in commerce, for which he offers some examples. He then outlines basic accounting practice, such the different types of books one must keep (ledger, journal and memorandum book), and briefly explains the Italianate jargon of accountancy (Conto, Cassa etc.).
Not in Goldsmiths', Hausdorfer, Herwood, Historical Accounting Literature, Kress, or Matsuda.
