- LEWIS, Joseph Slater The Commercial Organisation of Factories. A handbook for the use of manufacturers, directors, auditors, engineers, managers, secretaries, accountants, cashiers, estimate clerks, prime cost clerks, bookkeepers, draughtsmen, students, pupils, etc. (London and New York, 1896) pp. xxxvi, 540; with diagrams
- First edition. Joseph Slater Lewis [1852-1901] played only a small part in the story of the pioneers who strove to make industrial management an integral part of the strucure of British industry. But what is lacking in quantity is amply balanced by richness of interest. Lewis wrote one book, The Commercial Organisation of Factories, published simultaneously in London and New York in 1896, and hailed by the Institution of Electrical Engineers as "a monument to its author and a boon to all who desire to organise their manufacture on sound commercial lines."
The date of publication is interesting - 1896, the year after the appearance of F. W. Taylor's first paper giving an outline of what
was later to become The Principles of Scientific Management. Lewis had probably never heard of Taylor, but he was expounding a method of management, with all its procedures explained in detail, that can well claim to be an advance application of Taylor's later principles' (Urwick & Brech, p. 72).

(Edinburgh: printed by and for J. Hunter, For G.G. and J. Robinson, and T. Kay, London ... 1799) 8vo, pp. vii, [1] blank, 552, 19 supplement
- Influential and popular introduction to book-keeping, which had first been published in 1777-79. Such was the importance of this book that the book-keeping section was chosen in 1797 as the basis for the article on book-keeping in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. There were five editions by 1802.
"The most interesting part of Hamilton's work is the chapter entitled 'Practical book-keeping' where Hamilton examines 'varieties of the Italian method". He explains that the 'nature of the business' may make variations on the classical system proper and that he intends only to give some examples so that the learner will 'acquire a readiness in selecting or inventing proper ones, suited to every circumstance' (Bywater and Yamey, p. 186) His examples are varied and sometimes very complex with an emphasis on economic calculation.
The mathematician and political economist Robert Hamilton (1743-1829) was successively professor of natural philosophy and of mathematics at Marischal College, Aberdeen, and is best known, besides the present work, for his Inquiry concerning the Rise and Progress, the Redemption and Present State of the National Debt of Great Britain, published at Edinburgh in 1813.
