- RAINIER, F.R.S. A Synopsis of the Prices of Wheat, and of circumstances affecting them; particularly of the statutes which relate to it. From the commencement of the thirteenth century to the end of 1822: exhibiting in one view the market prices as they occurred, and as expressed in the present value of money. Together with statements which indicate the situation of the country as to its agriculture, commerce, and manufactures, population, public revenue, &c. (J. Hatchard and Son : London, 1823) v, 9 double-page charts, + 1 folding hand-coloured engraved graph ; 42 cm.
- Originally written by Rainier as a means of better understanding the 'Corn Question', the present work is an overview of the changing prices of corn in England and Wales from the thirteenth century to 1822, with parallel columns detailing important historical events and Parliamentary Acts. Where the appropriate statistical data is available, additional information of economic interest is provided: thus we are able to chart the varying fortunes of West Yorkshire broad cloth production between 1729 and 1796, as well as the levels of wheat imports-exports for the whole country from 1691 onwards. Lest readers forget the darker significance of some wheat price fluctuations, the historical commentary indicates periods of scarcity and famine (including the reign of Edward II, when prices rose thirteen-fold).
The work culminates in two graphical representations of the changing wheat prices. With currency values being themselves subject to fluctuation, a simple representation of nominal prices would have been of little use; instead, Rainier produced two graphs which attempt to illustrate the prices in 'real terms'. The first, which compares average wheat prices in France with those in England and Wales, adjusts values in accordance with the quantities of pure metal
contained within contemporary coinage; the second, which shows the prices of wheat registered by Eton College from 1589, translates the prices into the equivalent 1800 levels, based on calculations made by Sir George Shuckburgh Evelyn. [Source: Quaritch, London]

Le Caissier d'Amsterdam is not in Goldsmiths' or Kress collections, not in the Netherlands or one of the large national libraries.
