- BOSSI, G.A.C. Statistique générale de la France, publiée par ordre de Sa Majesté l'Empereur et Roi, sur les Mémoires adressés au Ministre de l'Intérieur, par MM. les préfets. - Département de l'Ain (A Paris, Chez Testu, 1808). With folding maps and folding table. (4), 720 pp.
- Perrot 7 (without the table)
The governments of the Directoire, Consulate and Empire intensified statistical efforst begun in the 18th century. Lucien Bonaparte and Jean Chaptal, Bonaparte's second and third ministers of interior, established the Bureau of Statistics, which lasted until 1812. Under an imaginative minister of interior, Chaptal, and a zealous bureau chief, Alexander de Férrière, it launched a massive statistical description of France in 1801. Although many of the reports were uneven in completeness and accuracy, it provided a wealth of information and it greatly helped in improving the art of phrasing questionnaires to secure precise information, an art which was just being developed. Subjects here are: topographie, population, histoire et administration, agriculture, industrie et commerce.

- Perrot, p. 213
The pp. 1-95 contain the important introduction, a general treatise on statistics by the Baron Fourier. The statistical tables have been numbered upto 63, not counting the 2 supplementary tables to table nr 10. The statistical material was prepared for the Comte de Chabrol (1778-1843), the prefect of the Departement de la Seine. Fourier was appointed director of the Bureau of Statistics of the department of the Seine by his former pupil Chabrol de Volvic, the prefect of the department. Fourier initiated a formidable demographic survey of Paris and its surroundings and showed how a stationary population is contructed according to age, under the influence of the rates of mortality in various ages. The tables include details on meteorology, population movements, public assistance, deaths, agriculture, fine arts, industry and commerce.- With an autograph dedication by the Comte de Chabrol on second blank.
