- J.A. No place, no date) pp. 33-75 + 4 folding tables
- One of the first treatises on the subject, the memoir was read at the Institut in the year 4 (1796) and covered the pages 33-75 of the Mémoires présentés à l'Institut des sciences, lettres et arts par divers savans. Sciences mathématiques et physiques Tome premier.
The text has also been published as Essai de statistique in 1800 (an IX). Studies the birth, death, and marriage rates among the inhabitants of Montpellier during the period 1772-1792 and draws from these calculations on life expectancy. The tables contain 'Tableau des naissances', 'Tableau des naissances d'enfans illégitimes', 'Nécrologie ou notice des âges des personnes mortes' (per year and per month, split into age groups and into male and female, and those who died in hospital, and among the inhabitants), 'Tableau du nombre des mariages' (by year and month), and 'Nécrologie des personnes centenaires mortes'. Based on the results of these researches, Mourgue endeavours to explain why the death rate is much higher in the last quarter of the years, especially since he discovered that similar information from other cities gave similar results. His explanation is that the differences in growth and activity of nature explain these significant differences in death rates: the activity of plants and other vegetation in spring and summer, Mourgue asserts, produces a healthier atmosphere and hence less people die. He supposes that the same condition of nature explains the birth rates which are significantly higher in November, December and January, which means that conception took place in March, April and May: the months in which the air is much healthier due to the activities of nature.
