archives and collections

  •
  • There are five institutes with holdings pertaining to Otto Neurath's pictorial statistics. These are the Österreichisches Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum (ÖGWM) and the Institute Vienna Circle/IVC (both in Vienna, Austria), the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, The International Institute of Social History (nederlandsch Economisch-Historisch Archief) and the Vienna Circle Foundation, Haarlem, and the Isotype Collection at the University of Reading.
  • Original material at the IVC, consists of 10 exhibition charts produced by the Mundaneum Wien between 1929 and 1933. The charts and his Arbeitsbibliothek were donated to the IVC by Otto's son, Paul Neurath. The ÖGWM in Vienna, the successor to Otto Neurath's original GWM, was established in 1945, with its old name Verein Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum. The ÖGWM's holdings of primary materials are limited in scope and accessibility. They comprise some original charts, books in first editions, papers, leaflets, and brochures. Not incorporated in the library but held separately, these materials are stored, without classification, cataloguing or systematic listings [source: Hadwig Kraeutler, Otto Neurath. Museum and Exhibition Work. Spaces (Designed) for Communication (Frankfurt am Main, etc. 2008) 103-104].
  • The materials at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag are considered to be "documentary to Gerd Arntz". However, there are original charts, lino-blocks for pictogram-production, original pictogram-prints (proofs), the picture dictionary, i.e. the collection of pictograms as they had been developed over the years in Vienna and The Hague. There are also books and other printed materials (postcards, catalogues, PR-publications) produced by the Isostat Institute in Moscow (from 1931 onwards), and 22 books and booklets designed by Marie Neurath, published in the years from 1948-1957 [source: Hadwig Kraeutler, Otto Neurath (Frankfurt am Main, etc. 2008) 104].
  • The International Institute of Social History (and the collection of the Nederlandsch Economisch-Historisch Archief at the IISH) houses several archives with materials pertaining to Neurath and Arntz and original material from the period the Economic History Library, Amsterdam donated by Neurath in exchange for exhibition space [see right]. The collections contains printed material as well.
  • The contact of the Dutch researcher-philosopher Henk Mulder with Marie Neurath was crucial for acquiring part of Otto Neurath's belongings and for transferring them from London in 1967. Since February 1992, these materials have been held at the Vienna Circle Foundation of the Rijksarchief in Noord-Holland [source: Hadwig Kraeutler, Otto Neurath (Frankfurt am Main, etc. 2008) 104].
  • In 1971 Marie Neurath decided to donate the Otto and Marie Neurath collection to the Library of Reading University. It is known as The Otto and Marie Neurath Isotype Collection. Today, the holdings of the Isotype Collection are used by the Department for teaching and for work assignments of students and can be consulted by the interested public on appointment.
The Isotype Collection-material is grouped according to, firstly original work by Otto Neurath and his teams, original charts other original exhibition materials, the photographic documentation, photographic work-materials (fragments of) typescripts and manuscripts books by or about Otto Neurath and team members, books which belonged to Otto Neurath and Marie Neurath, books related to or referring to Isotype work, but of a more recent date [source: Hadwig Kraeutler, Otto Neurath (Frankfurt am Main, etc. 2008) 105-109].
