• GESELLSCHAFTS- UND WIRTSCHAFTS-MUSEUM

• In 1924 the city of Vienna provided Otto Neurath with the financial means to set up a permanent exhibition about the problems of housing and housing shortage in Vienna. The name given to it was Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum. The museum offered Neurath the possibility to present social and economic facts to the public by means of pictorial statistics. During the late twenties and early thirties Neurath's ideas were developed to the perfected 'Vienna Method'. In those years the contacts with the Soviet Union and especially the Isostat institute in Moscow were intense.
• It lasted until 1934. The political situation in Vienna had become more and more dangerous for the museum. Otto Neurath, who was in contact with Posthumus' Economic History Archive (NEHA) in The Hague decided to emigrate to Holland and to continue the working The Hague as the 'Mundaneum Den Haag - Stichting voor Beeldpaedagogie'. He was dreaming of an international picture language that would also be able to supply graphic symbols for all spheres of daily life, pictograms, as we would call them now. The name given to this was ISOTYPE (International System of TYpographic Picture Education).
• The institute in The Hague was active in making of exhibitions, the illustrating of encyclopedias and books (among them Modern Man in the Making) and the production of propaganda material for the International Picture Language. Again these activities came to an end as the result of political developments. In 1940 Neurath escaped to England, where he set up with Marie Reidemeister the Isotype Institute. Gerd Arntz, the longtime head of the graphic studio, remained in the Netherlands where he continued the work in the Nederlandse Stichting voor de Statistiek, founded by Ph.J. Idenburg.
