  • Portrait Otto NeurathOtto Neurath, philosopher and social theorist, member of the influential 'Vienna Circle', was particularly associated with 'physicalism', which aimed to establish an entirely materialist foundation of knowledge. His best philosophical work was published in the group's journal Erkenntnis. In Vienna, he became involved in a project which evolved into the 'Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum', which tried to convey complicated social and economic relations to the Viennese public, known as the Vienna method. The Vienna method of picture statistics represents a remarkable episode in the history of statistical graphics. It was an organized attempt to use graphical design for the purpose of achieving changes in society, primarily through visual education of the masses, and especially by presenting basic socio-economic facts in a readily comprehensible form.
  • The best representation of the pictorial work is the publication Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft. Bildstatistisches Elementarwerk, published in commission for the Bibliographisches Institut Leipzig (1930). Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft is a collection of a 100 pictorial charts and 30 text tables. The scope on the theme was widely interpreted and different styles of representation were used to display and compare social, political and cultural aspects of different regions of the world.
